First Steps After an Accident or Loss
The first few hours after a loss matter. These steps apply to most claims, whether it involves your car, your home, or your business.
1
Make Sure Everyone Is Safe
Call 911 if anyone is injured or if there's a fire, gas leak, or other immediate danger. Your safety comes before any insurance step.
2
Prevent Further Damage
When it's safe, take reasonable steps to stop the damage from getting worse, such as shutting off water, covering a broken window, or moving property out of harm's way. Keep receipts for any supplies or emergency repairs.
3
Document Everything
Take photos and video of the damage, the scene, and any affected property before cleanup begins. Write down dates, times, and the names and contact information of anyone involved.
4
Report the Claim to Your Carrier
Contact your carrier using the claims information above. Have your policy number, a description of what happened, and your photos ready.
5
Let Us Know
Once the claim is reported, call or email our office during business hours. We'll make sure you understand next steps and help answer questions about your coverage.
Specific Situations and What to Do

Auto Accident
Move to a safe location if you can, call 911 if anyone is hurt, and contact local law enforcement. Exchange names, phone numbers, insurance information, and license plate numbers with the other drivers. Photograph the vehicles and scene, then report the claim to your carrier. If you need a tow, many policies include roadside assistance; check your carrier's app or ID card.
Water Damage or Burst Pipe
Shut off the main water valve, turn off electricity to affected areas if it's safe, and start removing standing water. Photograph the damage before anything is thrown away, and report the claim to your carrier promptly. Water damage gets worse quickly, so early reporting helps.
Storm, Hail, or Wind Damage
Stay clear of downed power lines and damaged structures. Document roof, siding, window, and vehicle damage with photos, make temporary repairs to prevent further damage, and report the claim. Be cautious with contractors who show up unannounced after a storm; talk with your carrier before signing anything.
Theft or Break-In
Call local law enforcement and get a copy of the police report or report number. Make a list of missing items with approximate values and any receipts or photos you have, then report the claim to your carrier.
Employee Injury at Work
Make sure the employee gets appropriate medical care, then report the injury to your workers' compensation carrier as soon as possible. Minnesota has reporting deadlines for workplace injuries, so prompt reporting protects both you and your employee. Call our office if you have questions about the process.
Business Property or Liability Claim
Document the damage or incident, collect contact information from anyone involved, and avoid admitting fault or making promises about payment. Report the claim to your carrier and send us any letters, demands, or legal notices you receive right away.

Claims Questions Our Clients Ask

Should I call my agent or my insurance company first?
For a new claim, especially an emergency or after-hours loss, call your insurance carrier first so the claim gets started right away. Then let us know during business hours so we can help with questions and next steps.
How do I file a claim after hours?
Use your carrier's 24-hour claims phone number, website, or mobile app, listed in the carrier directory above. Most carriers take claims around the clock.
What information do I need to file a claim?
Have your policy number, the date and location of the loss, a description of what happened, photos of the damage, and contact information for anyone involved. For theft or accidents, include the police report number if you have one.
Will filing a claim raise my premium?
It depends on the type of claim, your carrier, and your claims history. If you're unsure whether to file, call our office during business hours and we'll talk through your situation with you.
What should I do after a car accident in Minnesota?
Make sure everyone is safe, call 911 if anyone is hurt, and contact local law enforcement. Exchange information with the other drivers, photograph the scene, and report the claim to your carrier as soon as possible.
Make Sure Your Coverage Is Ready Before You Need It
The best time to review your coverage is before a claim. If it's been a while since anyone looked at your policies, we'd be glad to walk through them with you. Business owners can schedule a consultation, and families can request a quote for home, auto, and recreational coverage.
